Why are Timesheets Awful?
Time accounting has been a recurring problem for me over 12 years of a consulting career. Preparing invoices at every month end, I’d see under reported time. Often the invoices did not reflect the true effort. Why? Because I wasn’t capturing the time accurately so the weak link was me.
Timesheets are only as accurate as I am. When slammed with demands, problems and approaching deliverables, the tasks get done. But if they are minor and interleaved with other tasks, I forget to log the time for them. That time spent doesn’t get billed, and the work is given away. It adds up to lot over the time span of a year.
